The demo ended up being a Jersey club-ish beat, and I sent it to Holly, who put a whole other dimension to it. I wanted it to feel cinematic, so I made it with a program that’s designed for scoring movies. The prospect of that song’s creator pulling together a complete and compelling album sounds as ludicrous as Filthy Frank himself becoming a pop sensation (oh wait), but Baauer already did that on his debut Aa.
Unlike the cheap thrills of “Harlem Shake”, Baauer’s productions here are detailed and dense, while somehow retaining the looseness of dubstep’s best drops. I’d just seen that movie Solaris and thought it was so cool how the planet was an intelligent being. Bauuer's announcement was made in solidarity with those fighting against racial injustice. Then, at the last minute, we passed it to Hudson Mohawke—who has been an inspiration of mine from day one—and he helped with the finishing touches. Opener “PLANCK” sets the scene magnificently by disrupting some ominous ambience with a colossal tuba which would feel at home amongst the monoliths of 2001.
