Over-dramatizing in some scenes took some credibility away. Courtney Love, Prince Naseem projects on maiden White Star Productions slate (exclusive). Desmond Doss's fight in a war without carrying a gun is definitely worth of telling a story and I think Mel Gibson honors him well. Some great, visceral, brutal combat scenes (with fantastic film and sound editing). It goes for a nostalgic Americana feel, but it fails spectacularly. A tale well told in three acts – Doss’ early years through to meeting his wife; his army training; the battle scenes.
Hacksaw Ridge seems to want to stand with Saving Private Ryan or Flags of Our Fathers or Letters From Iwo Jima in its depictions of the brutalities of war, but it is closer to the war time combat films such as Objective Burma in wanting us to cheer on the heroic Americans killing the dirty Japanese.
