I didn't know what to expect as this was a free book when I downloaded it, but it was very entertaining and had a overall good feel and a very happy ending.

This story was very cute.
Not so good as The Railway Children, to my way of thinking, but still delightful in its own way. The comic genius of Robert McCloskey and his wry look at small-town America has kept readers and listeners in stitches for generations!

Their mother dead and their father impoverished through the malfeasance of his business partner, the Bastable kids try a number of schemes to renew the fortunes of the House of Bastable. I liked it way better than Five Children and It. Left in the care of the cruel Miss Slighcarp, the girls can hardly believe what is happening to their once happy home.
Good read! Now Mother has moved Roberta, Peter, and Phyllis from London to an old English country house.

That was fun, too: to be reading something else or traveling in England and suddenly get the reference -- and think "So THAT's what she meant! In this, the Henty novel covering the oldest time period of any, listeners will learn much about the domestic life, customs, religion, and military system of ancient Egypt. I received it in the same box with some other books. Please try again. The Story of the Treasure Seekers: Being the Adventures of the Bastable Children in Search of a Fortune, A GREAT BOOK -- and a comment on the references, Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2005, I find it odd that a book should be faulted because a reader doesn't understand all the references. I suggest the answer is "Yes".

The Bastable kids are great, Oswald, the 'mystery' narrator is a joy, typical boy and the children trying to help their father, in adult situations they really don't understand, has great comic moments and a non sentimental poignancy.

When mother gets sick, it is he to whom they turn for help. A challenge but nice to read a classic again. Unable to add item to List. Amusing and entertaining but old fashioned language hard for today’s children to follow.

I rather suspect, too, unfortunately, that the average 9 - 13-year-old nowadays would find it sufficiently challenging to make their gaining the full benefit of the subtle humour ungraspable. Mainly set around Lewisham and Blackheath this is also another charm of this, for me at any rate, as I know the area quite well.
