Towers were built near kivas and likely used for look-outs. They grew beans, corn and squash and raised turkeys. The Monument is managed as an integral cultural landscape containing a wealth of historic and environmental resources. The Monument contains the highest known archaeological site density in the United States and has been used or inhabited by humans, including the Northern Ancestral Puebloan culture (or Anasazi), for 10,000 years, and continues to be a landscape used by humans today. This undiscovered gem is an intimate, off-the-beaten-path archaeological site located at the southern edge of the San Juan Mountains  in Southwestern Colorado. By 1280, new construction had stopped and people began migrating out of the pueblo. Thousands of undocumented artifacts have been removed from the monument and now reside in private collections.
