The Mud Brook Trail leaves the south side of the parking area and follows Mud Brook along an old woods road, ascending gradually for 1.7 miles. The trail itself is crushed stone - excellent for most uses - and you can connect to the Bangor and Aroostook Trail, making for an epic odyssey. Drive 2.8 miles to a small parking area. Success! AT continues .1 mi. Frances Wood Preserve : 438 wooded acres with a 1.5-mile loop trail past streams and bogs that support deer, beaver and bobcats, warblers, and abundant wildflowers. The section of Bog Road which provides access to the parking area for the northern Caribou Trail trailhead is not maintained for winter travel. This 12-miler climbs out of Black Brook Notch and connects a string of summits with far-reaching views of distant peaks and countless lakes.

After that the trail undulates greatly - which is not my favorite thing as going a mile uphill on your way back when you’re already tired is not ideal. The trail was muddy in sections, but there was only one little patch of snow on the Caribou. The snow was very deep still towards the top and the trail not very clearly marked, but if you prepare for snow and utilize the trail map it is a great hike! It uses the old Aroostook Valley Railroad bed between Presque Isle and New Sweden, which was discontinued in 1996, and passes through the towns of Washburn, Caribou and Woodland. The way was not marked when I was here. We did the loop, ascending via the Caribou Trail from 113 and descending on the Mud Brook Trail.

There were no rock formations (cairns). The only thing HARD about this was that the trail is not marked. Beautiful hike with a great reward at the summit. The trail crosses Morrison Brook several times and intersects with the Mud Brook Trail at 3.1 miles before climbing over the col into the Bog Brook basin and ending at Bog Road (5.7 miles). We had a few concerns: despite the well-worn trail the markings were minimal (non-existent) making it difficult, at times, to follow especially when crossing the brook.
