By Jeb Wright Hughie Thomasson Interview (2005) Formed in Tampa, Florida in 1972, The Outlaws featured vocalists/guitarists Hughie Thomasson Henry Paul, Billy Jones bassist Frank O'Keefe, and drummer Monte Yoho.

People ask me why we made this record and I tell them that I did it because creativity is all about what we do. I am trying to finish what I started and I am trying to prove myself in the eyes of the fan base.

It wasn’t one person’s vision or journey, it was a group effort. They were part of the Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam tour in the summer of 2007. They would fight, fight, fight and it was like, “Fuck you.” The Allman Brothers were like a freaking acid trip.

I was very excited at that opportunity, but it would have meant we would have had to go to North Carolina and spend a few weeks living in a motel. It was a delight and a joy to write these songs and take the songs into the studio with the band and see them turn them into an Outlaws album.

I think it is essential to release that album because where would the body of work of the band be without it? Clive flew down to Columbus, Georgia where we were playing with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Henry: I love Hughie. It happened from 1970 to 1975.

I am saving the best for last, as Monte Yoho came in and turned in the performance of his career. I didn’t play lead guitar and I never got any ink on that end, so I guess I was trying to prove myself with my writing.

It could become one of those Cult Classic success stories. I made it clear that I would work up some songs off the record and take it on the road and support it fully. Paul was very involved in the songwriting and production of the album as he wanted to craft his vision and prove his worth as one of the leaders of the band.     * Diablo Canyon (1994) It is a little frustrating because you know you have a great piece of work and it is hard to get it out there for people to hear. We voiced our support for the record. We were more melodic. Rob Zombie New Horror Film “31”‏ Launches Crowdfunding Campaign. Trust me when I tell you this…we go out and do this in large part for the love of what it is. Those Friday and Saturday nights were a way to meet and interact and learn about girls, fighting and racing your car.

I am very optimistic that the record will find its way out there in a way that’s fair. Hughie’s blood family is committed to making that happen and we support it. The music, it turned out, wasn’t meant to die with him, as the band reunited with original member Henry Paul back in the fold.
Jeb: Is it frustrating that if a young country stud sang it and had the promotion machine behind him it would be a hit but because it is the Outlaws you will have a much tougher time. Thomasson had accepted a position in Lynyrd Skynyrd.

My affection for Hughie, Frank, Billy and Monte is something that I know we all shared. This essentially sidelined the Outlaws for a decade. Currently there are 1 comments. For example: the Outlaws 1976 live album, Bring it Back Alive, which best represents the band in their hey day and at their peak, features Hughie and Billy.

I am glad that Billy, Monte, Chris and all of us can share that under the same sun.     * Jeff Howell, bass guitar, vocals (former member) Jeb: Let’s wrap up the interview about the album and the tour. We had friends in very influential places thanks to Ronnie’s endorsement. Henry: We often put seven or more songs in the set when we play live. The Outlaws shared some similarities with other Southern Rock bands of the day, not the least of which was the sound of twin lead guitars, but they also had their own totally unique sound that blended country and rock.

I wanted to make sure we didn’t miss that Hurry Sundown type personality. In December 2007, 2008 Outlaws dates were released.

Henry: My instincts, over the entire course of my career, have been the one thing I could always count on. If I didn’t think that then I wouldn’t say it.

Unfortunately, there is a business connected to music and sometimes that can stop things in their tracks. I can’t believe I am cheering for new music.”. Jeb: As an Outlaw fan, I loved Hughie Thomasson. I think I did have a significant part in who the Outlaws were.

This manager had influence and power to bring the recording industry to our door. There is nothing lethargic or mundane about the record, in my opinion. It wasn’t like New Jersey where you were in a little township and isolated. Copyright 1998-2018 by Swampland Inc. All rights reserved.

    * Soldiers of Fortune (1986) Somewhere in the middle were the Outlaws.     * Lady in Waiting (1976) I knew if we did that then we could spend whatever time it took in order to make it great.

Country music, today, doesn’t hold as much credibility as the album It’s About Pride does.

Every time you say that it makes me smile. He really took a lot of time to make the story and the music come together and it really paid off. They were led by the phenomenal Hughie Thomasson. It has nothing to do with us; it has more to do with someone else.

This is where we’ve been and where we’ve arrived at, in our life. Henry: Ronnie didn’t introduce us to Clive, but he did introduce us to his manager. Band Members     * Rick Cua, bassist, vocalist, pianist, (former member) Some of the stories, whether it be John and Paul, or Don Henley and Bernie Leadon…it is a tough marriage. To rebound from that with the Henry Paul Band was a testament to my resilience, work ethic and commitment. Paul and Robbins left to resume their careers in Blackhawk in early 2006, but the remaining band continued on.     * Monte Yoho, drums

Hughie joins an ever increasing list of Southern Rock musicians who have passed away in recent years. I went back and there was nothing left to see. I think it is important for the Outlaw fans and most importantly for Hughie. There have been problems trying to get that record out and I feel bad for Hughie’s sisters and mom who want to see his work out there.

    * Frank O'Keefe, bass guitar (former member, died in 1995) The songs weren’t overly laborious, they happened rapidly and pretty painlessly.     * Barry "B. It was very important to create an Outlaws record that substantiated the imagery of the musical legacy.

Billy and Chris’ guitar playing is amazing.

It was very open and bands could gain a foothold on a regional level if they demonstrated exceptional qualities. Their use of three and four part harmonies set them apart from other bands who usually relied on a single lead vocalist.

I am thankful to everyone in this band that they care enough about this music to invest what they have in it. This is not some highly rewarding financial equation.
