At first, relations between the Aboriginal peoples and the European newcomers were generally friendly. The nation is said to have been forged not in Canberra but on the beaches of Gallipoli (where Australian soldiers perished in a forlorn assault on Turkish fortifications in the First World War). News reached Melbourne on 11 November 1850 and celebrations coincided with the opening of the new Princes Bridge over the Yarra River, the finance for which had been an ongoing point of contention between the district and the New South Wales legislature. Additional convict ships arrived in 1790 and 1791. The New South Wales colonists, however, resented the fact that the new constitution was in essence a reworking of the unsuccessful model the Colonial Office had tried to introduce in New Zealand. When transportation to VDL ceased in 1853, the colony was still dominated by infrastructure created by, and for, convicts. By 1840, however, there were 10,000 settlers in the Port Phillip area and a Separation Association was founded. In a letter to New South Wales Governor Charles FitzRoy in July 1847, he proposed elaborate reforms whereby Port Phillip, Van Diemen’s Land and South Australia would each receive representative government along the lines operating in New South Wales. The food shortages eased as the settlers learned to grow crops. However, even then the town was still visually attractive enough to catch the eye of Mark Twain, the American author, who was visiting Hobart in 1895: When the last convict ship docked in Fremantle harbour on 9th January 1868, the convicts disembarked into a colony which had developed considerably from its origins in 1829. As part of this process, the petition for separation of the colony was brought before Britain’s House of Commons in 1842. The Polish scientist/explorer Count Paul Edmund Strzelecki conducted surveying work in the Australian Alps in 1839 and became the first European to ascend Australia's highest peak, which he named Mount Kosciuszko in honour of the Polish patriot Tadeusz Kościuszko. The National Museum of Australia acknowledges First Australians and recognises their continuous connection to country, community and culture. It was founded in 1836. The Swan River Colony in western Australia was founded as a free settlement in 1829. By 30 June the Gold Discovery Committee had received mineral specimens from the towns of Clunes and Castlemaine that were confirmed to be the precious mineral, and the Victorian gold rushes that would transform Victoria had begun. These statistical registers change format over the years, but remain a valuable source of data for the colonial and the Federation period. It also gave them free land on the condition that it be used for a productive purpose. Responsible government was granted to NSW in 1855, and all males over the age of twenty-one were enfranchised in 1858 (in 1896, Tasmania became the last colony to grant universal male suffrage). The history of NSW in the mid-nineteenth century is substantially about gold and succession. In the 1850s, Melbourne had a larger urban population than Sydney, although NSW (mainly due to continuing gold discoveries in inland towns) maintained a healthy population of 300,000. Australian culture was positioned as backward, rude and uncouth. They used the posts to build a frame and the slabs to make walls. Australian convicts are now seen by many as the founders of the State, a triumph of rebellious spirit emerging from a flawed criminal justice system. Conflict soon developed, however, as the Europeans expanded their settlements into Aboriginal territory. The dominant culture remained stubbornly British for a long time, however, and the "convict stain" weighed heavily. They put wooden stakes in the ground and wove branches between them to make walls. The colony started with low numbers of free settlers and a low level of infrastructure. That means that each person received measured amounts of foods, such as pork, flour, and rice, which were brought to the colony by ship. In 1849 he used this report as the basis for a Bill that was introduced to the British Parliament without waiting for comments from FitzRoy or the colonists. The boom years of the 1880s were then followed by the bust of the 1890s, when recession and economic downturn returned to Hobart. Henry Fyshe Gisborne had been appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands in the Port Phillip District in 1839. In 1901, the Australian colonies of New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia, together with the Northern Territory, federated into one country. The settlers also built houses using a technique called wattle and daub. By 1901, the population had reached over 100,000. The houses of wealthy landowners and government officials were larger and more elaborate. It took the New South Wales Parliament another seven months to establish the Legislative Council for the new colony, which came into existence on 1 July 1851, a date celebrated with an annual holiday in Victoria until supplanted by Federation in 1901 and later by the celebration of Australia Day. Some educated women served as tutors or governesses. When the British government established a penal colony in New South Wales in 1787, they possibly envisaged that convict transportation to the Australian colonies would last for a number of years, decades or over a century maybe, but they would probably have gasped at the reasons why some colonies campaigned to end the trade in "unwilling emigrants". The colony of South Australia was the first free settlement that remained that way. Both would lose out. Conditions improved in the early 1800s as settlers expanded inland from the coast, opening up more fertile lands for farming as well as vast tracts for raising livestock. In Western Australia transportation continued until 1868. A new, third level of content, designed specially to meet the advanced needs of the sophisticated scholar. The country experienced the same kind of economic turmoil as the UK in the 1920s and 1930s (with Western Australia nearly leaving the Federation in 1922), but the country enjoyed growth thereafter, stimulated and enriched by migration from Europe and the Far East. Wheat became an important crop. In January 1839 Charles La Trobe was appointed superintendent of the Port Phillip District. Most states have holdings of annual statistics. The proportion of the Australian population that actually has convict lineage is unknown, is probably much lower than the proportion of people descended from free settlers and, in any case, we know that criminality is not genetically inherited. The penal settlement at Port Arthur was closed in 1877, but the last of the convicts, aged and some in ill-health after so many years of captivity, were still living there as the complex became an infirmary. The Fremantle/Perth conurbation then boasted a Town Hall, a boys’ school, a cathedral and a large Government building. The level of petty theft and alcohol-related offending by ex-convicts, and also by new settlers, meant that the prison (built in 1851) became a significant place in the centre of Fremantle. VDL became Tasmania in 1856, in an attempt to try and distance the colony from its former function. With wood from those trees they built crude homes known as slab huts. Parliament did not include the petitioners’ proposition within the amended constitution but their document helped raise awareness that the majority of colonists in the southern district were in favour of partition. Gibraltar took in those serving penal servitude until 1875, but essentially the British were done with convict transportation by 1868. However, the colonists worked hard to establish a working community until the 1850s when labour shortages threatened the continued progression of the colony. Two of the most notorious events were the Myall Creek Massacre in New South Wales and the Pinjarra Massacre in Western Australia. Children of the elite attended school or were educated at home by tutors or governesses. It was founded as a free settlement in 1829 but later became a convict colony. South Australia, founded in 1836, was the only British colony in Australia to begin as a free settlement and remain that way.
